Find Clay County Traffic Tickets

Most Clay County traffic tickets begin with the citation an officer hands you. That paper names the court that holds your case, usually the magistrate court, and the clerk there keeps the record. A docket lookup can show the charge, the court date, a plea, and the costs. Town ordinance citations may run through a municipal route instead, and a serious matter can reach circuit court. Before you pay or fight the ticket, search the docket in the court named on the notice. Then confirm the newest hearing date with that court directly.

Clay County Traffic Court Records

State-law traffic citations in Clay County start in Magistrate Court. Two magistrates hear these cases. Magistrate Court Clerk Trisha L. Triplett keeps the local records. The public information route is MCRS. It shows the charge, the filing date, the schedule, docket events, and the disposition. What it never shows are the filed documents themselves. Copies of those come from the clerk at 262 Main Street.

A town ordinance ticket runs differently. A local ordinance can create one. Then the Town of Clay may hear it in a municipal court or a mayor or police court. The town publishes no official docket, calendar, or payment portal of its own. So read the court name printed on the citation before anything else. DUI, reckless driving, or a suspended-license offense can involve both a magistrate and a circuit path. The Clay Magistrate Court record follows the named court. It does not follow the agency that wrote the ticket.

Clay Traffic Cases Start Here

Call the Clay Magistrate Court Clerk when MCRS leaves a question open. The clerk can confirm whether a citation posted. The clerk can also say which magistrate holds it and how to request a paper or certified copy. Visit the office at the Clay County Judicial Annex, 262 Main Street, Clay, WV 25043. The clerk phone is 304-587-2131. The judiciary also lists magistrate lines at 304-587-2620 and 304-587-2524.

Let the citation set the route. A state-law ticket points to Clay Magistrate Court. A town ordinance belongs with the town contact shown on the notice. An appeal or a circuit-level criminal case goes to WVPASS. The Circuit Clerk can be reached at 304-587-4256. This court-first habit matters. A payment result is not the full Clay County traffic docket.

Looking Up a Traffic Ticket

For Clay County magistrate cases, MCRS is free and statewide. Search by first name, last name, or case number. It returns up to 30 public results. The magistrate payment portal works differently. It takes only an exact citation ID, case ID, or payment-plan ID. It reports payment status rather than the full court record.

  1. Read the citation and identify the court, appearance date, citation ID, and any case number.
  2. Search MCRS by exact case number when available, or by the cited person's name. Open the Clay County result.
  3. Review the newest event-schedule row and docket entry. Do not rely on an old hearing date.
  4. Use the exact-ID payment portal only for payment information. It does not replace MCRS or the clerk's file.
  5. Call or visit the Magistrate Court Clerk when the case is absent, the document is needed, or the setting is unclear.
  6. For a town citation or circuit matter, use the court printed on the ticket and the matching municipal or circuit contact.

The court posts no daily printed traffic calendar online. A hearing date instead comes from the counter, a phone call, a mailed notice, the MCRS schedule, or the WVPASS circuit record.

Clay Traffic Portal Search Fields

The two state systems want different identifiers. A broad name search can surface a public magistrate case in MCRS. The result limit, though, makes an exact case number the safer pick. The payment tool is stricter still. A near match may return nothing even when the Clay County ticket exists.

The official payment search screen shows these exact-ID paths and its payment notice.

Clay County traffic ticket exact citation and payment search fields

That screen helps once the right ID is known. For the fuller Clay County case route, MCRS and the clerk remain the better sources.

Note: The payment portal's exact-ID requirement can produce no result when one digit or case-code character is wrong.

How to Find Your Traffic Court Date

Your first court-date notice is the citation itself. Under W. Va. Code §17C-19-4, a misdemeanor traffic citation must set an appearance at least five days after arrest, unless the cited person demands an earlier hearing. A later notice or court order can move that date. In MCRS, open the case detail and read the newest Event Schedule row. Check too for any newer notice or continuance entry.

Case NumberUse the exact number on the notice; a magistrate example is 25-M17C-01104.
Event TypeCourt Hearing, Notice of Hearing, preliminary hearing, trial, or another scheduled event.
Date and TimeThe posted setting; compare it with the most recent served notice.
Room and LocationThe courtroom may be listed or may state that it is still to be determined.
JudgeThe magistrate or judge assigned when that field is populated.
Reason ClosedAn event status, not proof that the Clay County case itself is sealed.

A continuance motion is not a new date. The docket sequence often runs from motion code MGMCT to event-closed code MGHCC, then to a new notice code MGNCH. Call the clerk if that chain looks incomplete.

When a Clay Ticket Is Missing

A ticket can vanish from search for simple reasons. It may be too new to post. The name may be entered differently, or the exact ID typed wrong. The case might also sit in a municipal route or have moved into circuit court. Try the case number first, then the name in MCRS. If only the payment tool fails, do not conclude the case was dismissed.

Call the Clay Magistrate Court Clerk with the citation in hand. Give the issue date and the cited name. Give the issuing agency, the citation number, and the court listed. Town ordinance? Use the town contact printed on the citation, since Clay runs no official municipal portal. For an appeal or circuit case, check WVPASS and contact the Circuit Clerk. One narrow, exact inquiry finds the court record fastest.

Pay or Contest a Ticket

Paying is not the same as contesting. Magistrate Rule 7 covers telephone pleas for many citations. You mail in the completed citation afterward along with the assessed sum. Serious offenses demand an in-person plea. That list includes DUI, reckless driving, listed suspended-license offenses, negligent homicide, and certain injury offenses. Under W. Va. Code §50-5-14A, tendering the assessed payment can operate as a no-contest plea and judgment of conviction.

Pay or PleadContest
May resolve an eligible citation through the plea and payment routeEnter a not-guilty plea in person or by mail with the magistrate court
Payment may be a no-contest disposition, not a mere account transferThe court schedules a trial and sends a trial notice
Exact-ID online payment adds the state portal chargeKeep mailing proof and contact the clerk if notice does not arrive
Serious listed offenses can require personal appearanceRead deadlines, filing method, and continuance terms in the notice

Failure to appear: A missed response can lead to a complaint and warrant. The magistrate court may notify DMV within 90 days of the setting if the person has not appeared or responded to the court's satisfaction.

The statewide rules on magistrate criminal procedure govern citation pleas and trial notice. Trust those rules, not the payment button.

Clay Traffic Trial Notice

Pleading not guilty is what starts the path to a trial date. Under Magistrate Rule 11, a party who is not in custody should get notice by first-class mail. It should come at least six weeks before trial. It must cover the date, place, time, and magistrate. The mailing has to cover pretrial-motion deadlines, the filing method, and limits on continuances. Hold onto your plea copy and proof of mailing.

The notice from the court beats an old portal entry every time. No trial notice in hand? Call the Clay Magistrate Court Clerk instead of letting the response date slip by. A phone call alone rarely builds the record you need to prove a plea was timely. Pull the case docket instead. Confirm the plea, the notice, and the current schedule in order.

Note: A pending motion to continue does not change a Clay County traffic date until the court acts and issues a new setting.

Traffic Court Record vs Driving Record

A traffic ticket leaves a paper trail in two places. The court traffic record sits with a clerk. In Clay County, that means the magistrate, circuit, or municipal clerk that heard the citation. It holds the charge and the plea. It also covers each setting, the judgment, any dismissal or deferral, costs, and other court events. The West Virginia DMV driver record is a different file about licensing. There you may see reported convictions, points, suspensions, and reinstatement status. A court disposition can be reported to DMV. Even so, the two records never merge into one.

Court fileCitation, charge, pleas, hearings, judgment, costs, and docket events.
Licensing custodianWest Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles.
Licensing fileReported convictions, points, suspensions, and reinstatement status.

Asking DMV for your driver record is not the same as running a Clay County court docket search. Each record answers to its own public office. A public court portal is not the DMV file either, so match your request to the right holder.

Clay Deferral Is Not Guaranteed

The statewide court-form index lists a Motion to Dismiss Traffic Citation, form SCA-M340NP. State law also lets a municipality set up a driver-safety-course option by local action. That power is discretionary. It does not cover commercial driver's license holders or commercial-vehicle operation. It also excludes DUI and any offense with mandatory jail.

Neither Clay County nor the Town of Clay publishes a defensive driving policy, fee, or eligibility list. A statewide form alone proves nothing about local approval. Ask the magistrate or municipal clerk about options. Find out whether any option fits the cited offense. Ask which filing deadline controls. The court, not the portal, decides a motion.

Clay Traffic Costs After Judgment

Fines and costs you leave unpaid keep working against you. W. Va. Code Chapter 50, Article 3 allows a $10 late fee after 180 days. Notice comes next, and then stronger collection tools. Can't pay in full? Request a payment plan with the financial-inability affidavit. The statute accepts electronic payment, card, cash, money order, or certified check as court rules allow.

Unpaid court obligations can trigger a suspension. If that happened, the law provides two paths back: reinstatement after full payment plus a $25 DMV reinstatement fee, or a payment plan plus a $25 administrative fee, with clerk notice to DMV and the statutory waiver mechanism. Check the live account with the Clay clerk before sending money. The docket must show the court's current balance and action.

The official traffic appearance-notice statute also explains why the citation's court and date come first.

That statutory notice rule sets the baseline for responding in court. Later notices and docket entries can still move the real date, so read the newest entry.

Copies and Fees

An MCRS search costs nothing. MCRS hosts no document images. For a copy of a filed Clay County magistrate traffic document, go to the clerk. Expect the nominal statutory copy fee. When a traffic matter becomes a circuit record, the Circuit Clerk charges its published circuit copy rate. Ask either office about certification, page count, payment, and postage. Neither posts a separate Clay certification surcharge.

A written magistrate criminal-history search runs $25 per name under the statute, with stated exceptions. That paid service is not a free MCRS docket lookup. It also is not a request for one known Clay County traffic case.
